Insane burgers and some sunny skateboarding.

So I’ve just got back from Barca filming with the Fabric team and I was going to do a huge blog post on said trip. Though it’s going to take me ages to write it all up so I’m going to do it over the weekend. Until then enjoy a few skate pics from last weekend and also a little review of ‘Fat Hippo’ burger joint in Jesmond.

I’ve been craving a proper handmade burger for a while now and it’s something of a rarity in Newcastle. Most of the places that do burgers either provide you with preprocessed burger patties which tasty rubbery and hard or they churn out sad looking things at ridiculously prices. The only place so far which has been ok has been the new Coast restaurant in ‘The Gate’, from the outside it looks like standard franchise rubbish but I have to say the burgers were pretty good. I’ve also heard the new burgers at ‘The Forth’ are good but I’ve yet to try them. Anyway I’m digressing, I’ve been hearing good things about ‘The Fat Hippo’ and the pictures plastered over Facebook etc got me pretty excited. Myself, Nicola and my mate Christian decided to test it out the other night.

First impressions were that it was a cosy and twee little place that seemed pretty casual.
From what I could gather you could create any burger from the ingredients on the menu, though the thing which caught my eye was the triple stacked burger. As every burger is half a pound I felt this one and a half pound beast would definitely fill me up! I ordered it with standard cheese, swapped the jalapeno’s for caramelised onions and got a side of skinny fries.

I’ve got to say the burger was pretty darn good, it was soft, juicy and just the right thickness (OOOO MATRON). There were a few things however which could be improved, first off they gave you the burger on a small wooden plate. While this may look cool and quirky it ended up being completely counter productive! It was too small to work as a plate as food kept falling off the side when you were eating and as it had grooves through it the food would get stuck within it! The second thing was that the burger could have had a bit more sauce, while they did provide a healthy amount of condiments, once you received the burger the size of them makes it hard to dismantle it and add the much needed moisture.
Despite these few points I would highly recommend ‘The Fat Hippo’ if you want a proper burger, it gets a fat 7/10 from me!

Right so after that here’s a cheeky bit of skating from last week.

We decided to go on a little mission out of town instead of skating the same old spots last weekend. While we ended up walking a lot we did skate some places which we hadn’t hit up in while and as always a good time was had by all!

Here we have Will performing a noseslide/k grind on this mellow kicker to rail.

Here he is again with a sunny bs tail.

And finally here is Josh doing a hefty ollie!

Hopefully I’ll have been bothered to write up the Barca post by next week, so until then have fun!

A week of Will with some added food.

So last week it was finally a bit warmer which as usual meant I went skating with Will.

I met  newly sponsored Native Skate Store rider William at the Cluny as apparently he’d found some ‘amazing’ new spots. This got me very excited however as usual I was bitterly bitterly disappointed. The first one was a building which was open  and the second was wet. Will claimed the last spot was a class natural fun box. He’s wrong.  He did a ollie which you see below, he wanted to do a better stunt but we decided the only way to make it look good would be to come back and film it at night with his trousers rolled up and wearing  a 3/4 baseball tee.

We then hit up a gap which some people might remember from the ‘Say please and thank you’ trailers. Will was still distraught that his footage was never released so he wacked out a classic bs heel to hold back the tears.

After strolling back to town we hit up the chinese bakery for some sustenance, when departing Will made the claim that everyone working in there were like Pokemon’s. He claims this is because they ask you lots of questions like the people in the shops in the Pokemon game and not because he’s a massive racist.

We then hit up this tasty ledge in Fenham, if I was a good filmer I would always have wax but because I’m not I didn’t. Luckily Will was on point and he waxed it up real good.

He then proceeded to blast out this lovely tailslide, he was claiming flip out but we didn’t have a chance to see if he could because loads of charvers turned up.

After that I departed to go get some pizza. Earlier in the week me and Nicola had gone for a early valentines meal at Cafe 21. Below you can see that I took some low quality pictures of some high quality food.

For my starter I had an egg covered in bread crumbs on a bed of duck and mushrooms. I must say if I could could eggs to that perfection I would have them with every meal, unfortunately I can’t so I just have mayo.

For the main I went for the venison and spätzle, I didn’t take a pic of the spatzle but it was amazing as was the venison!

Puddings always end up looking aesthetically pleasing and I have to say mine was no exception. It was a pistachio and olive oil cake with rhubarb and icecream. It was a perfect blend of sweet and savory and it went down a treat! The cold, wet and windy walk home me and Nicola had to take after did not go down a treat however!

It seems like I’ve been doing this post in the wrong order but hey you get what you pay for. This is young William again and he’s performing a large ollie over this rail into a horrible wood based landing. Will is claiming boardslide pop over next time but we’ll see if that happens…

I’m off to Barca next week so hopefully my next post should be pretty good but who knows!

Falafel Skate House weekend showdown.

I was down in London last weekend helping my brother clear some stuff out of his flat, while there I decided to meet up with the new Falafel Skate House, i.e Mellon, Matty and Nick.

This was after we managed to escape the ‘Great Flood Of Newcastle’.

When we arrived in London, my brother surprised us with a book he had edited (And also wrote articles in), he got the intelligence and I got the dashing good looks.

On the first day Mellon was busy finishing off his Art show so I could only skate with 2/3 of the crew, but we started the day off at one of favourite parks, Mudchute.

Nick threw down this lovely Bs Heelflip

Matty then did about 6 Bs 360 ollie’s so I could get a good photo

Nick ended up ripping his jeans playing an extreme game of SKATE with me and Matty. His trousers just couldn’t handle the raw power of my Funky flips; while me Matty initially found this amusing we ended feeling a little sorry for him as they were £100 pound Supreme ones. I let him know for future reference that if he wants to play me SKATE he should get some trousers made of sterner stuff, maybe elasticated stone.

We also briefly caught up with Mr Peter Lally. He was riding his bike around so couldn’t partake in the shred, he did however borrow a board and drop in on Euston banks.

On the Friday night me and the family decided to go for a nice meal so we descended on ‘Quilon’ in Westminister.

I went for the Fisherman’s catch for the starter, this had Crab, Prawns and I think Cod.

For the main I had some sort of Lobster dish, it was lovely especially when topped off with a tasty paratha side.

Strangely I didn’t fancy pudding but I had a cheeky bit of my mum’s which was a banana pudding with an Indian ice-cream side.

The next day I met up with recent VICE model Alex Mellon. Mellon lives above a Falafel shop which is rad but also sort of weird when you have to either walk behind the counter or up the fire exit to get in. Here’s a picture of Mellon looking all melancholy while sipping on his Pepsi max from a custom straw based cup… Haunting

We then ventured into the streets of London town where Mellon performed a classic Bs 180 over this path gap.

We spotted these banks on the net while looking for spots, when we got there we again realised we were not good enough to skate them.

Later while going to session some sausage banks we bumped into some of the Blueprint guys filming a trick over a gap. Not wanting to look like lurkers we skated a different spot a little further down the road. If you good at skating this spot would probably be rad but as me and Mellon aren’t we didn’t really do much there bar ride up and down the bank. Not wanting to waste this opportunity I decided to bolster Mellon’s modelling portfolio and took an ‘Arty’ black and white photo of him. I think it really captures the essence of disgruntled society.

Not wanting everyone to get photographic fame I also puled out a stunt, a boardslide along and down a curb high ledge, I think I may of even taken up to three pushes to get the speed.

I even managed to get a cheeky skate in with Ben LDL at East India ledges which are luckily next to my brothers flat. Here he is with a Sw Fs noseslide.

On the final day I met up with latest Fabric recruit Manny Lopez and we decided to go skate a few spots before I ventured home.

Here is a Bs 5.0, he was big spinning out but I didn’t get a sequence.

Before I left we went to film a trick at rail near Euston. Here is a trick of a Fs Smith warmup on the smaller one. Have to wait to see what went down on the bigger on!

Just had time before the train to go get a Bryon cheese and bacon burger and a massive Oreo milkshake, it was good enough to make me a sleepy little asian on the train home.

Goodbye and goodnight

The Steak Bake challenge!

So while eating one of Gregg’s delightful pasties I was informed that there is some sort of Gregg’s based challenge in Newcastle.

Apparently it’s to eat a steak bake in every one of Newcastle city centers Gregg’s. Off the top of my head I counted around 12, so this didn’t like it would be much of a problem.

I don’t think there is any prize or maybe even any competition but fuck it I’m still gonna have a crack at it!

So next week I will attempt to eat 10 of the glorious Gregg;s Steak Bakes (May be less delicious as the picture makes you believe)!

Join me then for some pastry fun!
